Since tellurium production is concentrated in just a few countries and is closely linked to copper refining, supply security is becoming increasingly important.
Areas of application
Tellurium plays a central role in several important technological applications: In photovoltaics, it is needed for cadmium telluride thin-film modules. In thermoelectric applications, it enables efficient cooling and the generation of electricity from heat. In metallurgical processes, it improves the properties of various alloys. In electronics, it is used in applications such as infrared detectors and data storage devices.
The initiatives span 16 EU countries. Financing and competitiveness remain key challenges.
Raw material supplies and market access are taking center stage. EU leaders are also set to discuss trade relations next week.
Compared with the first half of the year, the third quarter of 2026 was relatively quiet. Geopolitical factors, including China’s export controls, continued to influence the supply of many critical raw materials.
